Still in Omeo because it’s pretty, has free camping with hot showers and toilets both available 24/7 – what’s not to love? Anyway, we were hanging around for the platypuses, and to cut to the chase, we’ve had three nights in a row of sightings plus another sesh this morning. Also went to the gold mines – mainly it has to be said because that inveterate mine of misinformation “the man in the pub” told me that is where they can be found.
An unnecessarily unfair description, especially as he was the resident chef, and I’m sure they are there – it looks very platypussy but to be honest, when the Julie in the local library confirmed sightings where we’re camped we figured, Why bogther? So, a few schooners in the pub, followed by a pub dinner, and then back in time for a good half an hour of prime platypus action before bed by 9:00. There’s not a lot to be done here after dark, unless one wishes to prop up a bar stool until closing time. Everything else shuts between 2:00 – 7:00pm. Life in a country town. And frankly, if Omeo didn’t have so many tourists the pubs would be closed by 7:00 as well.
As well as the incredibly rare platypi, there are the equally rare, red-headed Gang Gang cockatoo & Ravens; the more common, though not often seen, Wombat and the platypus’s only close relative (though they look nothing alike) the Echidna.
